The Book

A true story of survival, secrets and a lost city

Between Two Jungles book cover by Jim Woodman

“Few people understand the dangers of the Mosquitia rainforest better than I do—and Woodman captures them with striking authenticity. But what makes this memoir unforgettable is the psychological jungle he was navigating at the same time.”

Steve Elkins · Leader of the Lost City of the Monkey God Expeditions

Between Two Jungles

A memoir by Jim Woodman

After Jim Woodman’s mother was sent to prison, he and his brother and sister were sent to live with their father. Rather than disrupt his new family, their father devised an extraordinary plan for his two sons: set up a base camp in Honduras and search for Ciudad Blanca, the legendary lost city hidden deep within the rainforest.

Their father, an eccentric adventurer who had founded the International Explorers Society, gave the parents of three other teenage boys every reason to believe the journey had been carefully planned and the risks properly considered.

It hadn’t.

He sent 17-year-old Jimmy, his 16-year-old brother Henry, and three of their friends into the remote and largely unexplored Honduran jungle. To guide them, their father hired a Vietnam veteran and snake hunter—a man he had never met—in exchange for a couple of airline tickets and the promise of $500 upon their safe return.

Deep in the Mosquitia, the five teenagers faced swollen rivers, venomous snakes, relentless rain, isolation, and a jungle that seemed determined to keep them from getting home. But the greatest danger came from the man who was supposed to protect them. Their guide became increasingly erratic and threatened to kill the boys and leave their bodies in the jungle.

The expedition was later featured in Sports Illustrated and on ABC’s American Sportsman. But the public story captured only the adventure. Between Two Jungles tells the deeper story of the chaotic childhood that led Jim there, the survival instincts it had already taught him, and what happened when five teenagers were forced to rely on themselves.

Between Two Jungles is a coming-of-age story that remained untold for 50 years.

The Expedition

A real expedition into the Honduran rainforest in search of a legendary lost city, told through the eyes of a teenager thrust into the unknown.

👁

Reading Danger

Survival meant learning to decode human intentions as much as animal tracks—because the most dangerous creatures walked on two legs.

🌏

A Lost City

The search for a fabled city hidden beneath the canopy becomes a metaphor for the deeper truths buried within the expedition itself.

The jungle wasn't the most dangerous thing we faced.
